Rajma Chawal a popular Punjabi dish is one of the healthy meal from Indian cuisine. Rajma masala recipe is easy, simple and fairly quick. Cooked rajma or kidney beans are cooked in onion and tomato based flavourful gravy and served with steamed Rice as a Rajma chawal meal. This is also known as Rajma rasmisa.
If you are a Punjabi or a North Indian or have ever been to north India one dish which you find will be universally present in the menu. Ask any Punjabi about their comfort food this will be the winner with a clear majority. Yes! That is Rajma chawal :). Rajma Chawal is a dish which is a true delight for every vegetarian North Indian. Rajma is Red kidney beans cooked into a thick creamy curry and served over steamed rice. As I said earlier mention the word Rajma-Chawal to me and see my face light up :). And if you add a dollop of ghee on top of hot and steaming plate of rajma chawal, it is heaven on your plate … believe me totally worth the calories.
It is simply a comfort food for me, a dish which simply provides the comfort, lights up the, memories with just its warmth and aroma. I think that comfort food is termed as comfort food because it works as a salve for our souls. It goes beyond the taste of the food alone, it sometimes is more about the emotions and happiness that comes with those food memories. During my rowing up years, me and my younger sister always used to look forward to Sundays, because Rajma chawal would be the highlight of the lunch. Till date Sundays are for Rajma masala curry at home with plain steamed rice, a bowl of boondi raita and papad.
That was silly old me, but when my son after finishing his course abroad called and wanted me to make rajma chawal first thing when he came home after months, it sure reaffirms my belief in the power of real comfort food and connect that food provides.
One of Sunday Rajma Chawal Meals which Mom cooked few days ago, Rajma Masala, Chawal, Tamatar wala Paneer, Paratha and papad… try that it is sheer bliss.
