Water contamination is a serious health hazard in India. Drinking untreated water or poorly stored water is cause of so many water born diseases. The microbes can cause so many water born disease and make you sick. Many of is are aware of health risks from microbes, but Do you know chemical poisoning is a bigger hazard of drinking unsafe water?
The chemical contamination in the water in the form of Arsenic, lead and nitrates etc can pose far more dangerous conditions. The Irony here is Microbes make you sick very quickly and body starts to show symptoms like nausea, vomiting to fever but other contaminants gradually build up in our system and may cause far more chronic health issues like skin diseases or cancers.
The other day while we were visiting Havells R&D lab to learn more about water purification system, this simple experiment was enough to realise the effect of water on living beings. This photo is self explanatory where all these cultures displaying various growth stages of seeds of same age, grown in same medium. These all are supplied water from different sources and it was interesting to observe how quality of water can affect the growth in plants, I wonder would it be any different in Humans?
Most of us worry about eating healthy food, maintaining a good standard of hygiene etc. Many of us know the importance of drinking clean water and often install some sort of water purifier in our kitchens to ensure safe drinking water for our family. But does your water purifier gives you 100% safe water is another question altogether. That’s why I thought to collate some common buzzwords and technologies in Water purifiers Industry you should know while choosing the best water purifier in India.
RO (Reverse Osmosis)
Reverse osmosis is a popular technique used in water purifiers. It removes dissolved materials, toxic minerals such a arsenic, nitrates lead as well as regular minerals from water. The problem with using only RO is It is not very effective method to remove microorganisms such as bacterias and viruses etc. Also, it removes natural minerals like iron, calcium etc too. Water becomes de-mineralized after RO treatment. Another thing that happens is the pH value of RO water becomes 5 to 6 which makes it acidic (neutral pH value is 7) which affects the taste. Of water, to rectify this problem some of the water purifier manufacturers brought in the TDS control mechanism in water purifiers.
UV means ultraviolet filtration, UV technique in water purifiers is used to kill the the microorganisms which manage to pass through RO filtration. It kills the microorganisms like bacteria and viruses etc, thus making the drinking water safe.
TDS (Total Dissolved Solvents)
TDS stands for total dissolved solvents. It’s one of the most commonly used term as far as water purifiers in India are concerned and a most misleading one at times. TDS in water refers to the amount of inorganic salts like calcium, magnesium, sodium potassium chlorides and sulphates etc and some of the organic matter that is present in the water. Now to understand it better, pure water is colourless and tasteless and neutral. But due to dissolved solids water acquires some taste, which depends on the amount of inorganic and organic matter and change in pH balance (alkaline/acidic properties).
Now to understand it better, RO water is 100% pure, but it is tasteless because of that, so some of the manufacturers started to use a technology TDS controller. What a TDS controller, usually has a UF filter along with RO in which some water is bypassed and thereby mixing RO water and UF filtered water. UF membrane with a pore size of 0.01 micron allows some of the dissolved solvents back into water and may allow some of the harmful compounds like fluorides, arsenic, lead etc back into water along with some regular minerals.
These harmful minerals can get deposited in our body and can cause some serious diseases over longer period of time.
Why I am Liking Havells Water Purifier ?
To ensure the clean and safe water a water purifier must have RO filter and UV filter, which removes all organic and inorganic impurities in the water. But who wants to drink tasteless de-mineralised water, considering this fact Havells instead of using TDS controller which allows some water mixing , they came up with mineral fortification in which minerals are added back after RO process using a refill cartridge. Havells water purifier comes with 8 stage RO & UV purification and I am told that it has Double UV protection that sterilizes water every 4 hours.
Another thing that I like about Havells Water purifier is it’s lid that completely seals the water tank so that purified water is not recontaminated once again. Another thing that impressed me was their in-house maintenance facility. Rather than relying on external service provider they have trained team to look after the maintenance of the product after installation, which promises to address any concern in shortest possible time.
If you are thinking of buying a water purifier in near future or already have one installed, DO consider the above points while making water purifier buying decision and choose best for your family and ensure 100% pure and safe drinking water for yourself and your loved ones. #ThinkHealthDrinkHealth
