Batata Harra, the spicy potatoes is a traditional Lebanese side dish. It’s a delightful combination of crispy potatoes, aromatic spices, and fresh herbs. you can serve it as a side, a snack, or even a main course.
Start by washing and peeling the potatoes. Cut them into 1-inch cubes.
Place the potato cubes in a bowl of cold water. This helps remove excess starch and keeps them crispy when cooked.
Step 2: Cook the Potatoes
Heat a large pan over medium heat and add the olive oil.
Drain the potatoes and pat them dry with a kitchen towel.
Add the potatoes to the pan and cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden and crispy.
Step 3: Add the Spices
Add the minced garlic to the pan and cook for another minute, making sure not to burn it.
Sprinkle the ground coriander, cumin, and chili flakes over the potatoes. Stir well to coat the potatoes with the spices.
Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Step 4: Finish with Herbs and Lemon
Turn off the heat and add the chopped cilantro and lemon juice.
Give everything a good stir, making sure the cilantro and lemon juice are evenly distributed.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy!
Transfer the spicy potatoes to a serving dish.
Garnish with a bit more fresh cilantro if desired.
Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious Batata Harra.
Notes
Tips for Making the Perfect Batata Harra
Choosing the Right Potatoes: I prefer using starchy potatoes like Russet for their crispiness. Waxy potatoes can work too, but they might not get as crispy.
Adjusting the Spice Level: If you’re not a fan of too much heat, reduce the amount of chili flakes. Conversely, if you love spice, feel free to add more!
Using Fresh Ingredients: Fresh garlic and cilantro make a huge difference in the flavor. Don’t skimp on these!
