Who doesn't love crispy, golden onion rings? They're the ultimate comfort food and a perfect snack for any occasion. If you thought you couldn't make them at home, think again! Today, I'm sharing my recipe for old-fashioned onion rings - vegan, egg-free, and oh-so-delicious. So let's get cooking!
2onionsLarge onion, sliced into 1/4-inch thick rings
1cupall-purpose flour
1club soda
1cupcornstarch
1tspbaking powder
1/2tspsalt
1/2tsppaprika
1/4tspblack pepperground
Oil for frying or baking
Instructions
Prepare the onions and preheat your oven or oil for frying.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, paprika, ground black pepper, and garlic powder. Gradually whisk in the water (or beer for a beer battered version) until a smooth batter forms.
Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated. Gently shake off any excess batter.
If baking, place the coated onion rings on a wire rack set over a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 450°F (232°C) for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
If frying, carefully lower the battered onion rings into the hot oil using a slotted spoon or tongs. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a wire rack set over a paper towel-lined tray to drain excess oil.
Serve your old-fashioned onion rings hot, alongside your favorite dipping sauces and enjoy!
