Khatti dal recipe, simple dal recipe that makes a comforting meal. This Moong masoor ki khatti dal is my version of delicious dal recipe adapted from the Hyderabadi cuisine.  Hyderabadi khatti dal recipe is made with Arhar dal/ yellow pigeon pea. Served with Jeera rice or cumin rice this dal chawal combo tastes almost like heaven. Dal rice is the best comfort food combo if you ask me.

Khatti Dal Fry recipe Moong massor ki dal

Khatti dal is light dal recipe from Indian cuisine. Many of my readers who are not Indian know it as Indian lentil curry. Most of Dal recipes from Indian cuisine take 25-30 minutes from start to finish. And, we all know Dal is one of most comforting and a staple dish from Indian cuisine. A mix of lentils, Indian spices and a tadka and you have got a delicious comforting pot of delicious dal is ready. Now it's upto you to eat it as Dal Rice or Dal Roti, it's just soul food any which way.

The cooking method of  Hyderabadi Khatti Dal is is almost same as that of the other dal recipes with a slight twist in the end… wait for the twist. You will love this Dal rice combination. But, if for some reason you do not eat rice, you can enjoy the yellow dal with just about anything, rice, paratha Chapati or Naan. Now if you are wondering why I am posting simple dal chawal recipe. I am of firm supporter of the camp that It is a beginner in the cooking who needs these simple recipes more than anyone else.  If as a young bride two decades ago I know the feeling of helplessness 😀 and subsequent booked long distance calls from remote Airforce stations to Mom for these basic recipes. I wish these blogs or websites existed at that time. But, we did not know about internet back then... let alone searching for a dal chawal recipe on google 😀

Dal is a the staple dish from Indian cuisine for lunch and dinner. Indian meals are incomplete without a dal in it. You can serve this dal fry with chapati or rice both ways it tastes great. There have been times when I enjoy the khatti dal as it is or may be a generous squeeze of lime.  You can also call it sour lentil soup. Trust me a bowl of hot dal can make you instantly feel better…. it is such a light and satisfying dish!

Khatti Dal Fry Recipe with Jeera Rice

Is this Dal Recipe different from Hyderabadi Khatti Dal ?

I cook it almost similar as Hyderabadi khatti dal, but instead of cooking arhar dal or toor dal I use moong and masoor dal. You guys must be wondering that why is it called khatti dal, Am I going to add some lime juice for the sourness in it?  (time to unfold the twist guys) Well! the dal tastes slightly tangy but not for lime juice, it’s the sweet and sour tamarind(Imli). Have you started drooling yet 😛 Hyderabadi recipes are well known for the extensive use of tamarind and chilli.

It is super healthy and nutritious with the goodness of vitamins, calcium and iron. If you are looking for a low GI Indian dish, Dal tadka or dal fry is naturally low GI and high fibre option.  Together with Rice, it makes a great gluten-free meal option.
