FAQs

Do I need to soak chickpeas for Instant Pot?

No, you do not need to soak chickpeas, but soaking helps a lot. Soaked chickpeas cook faster, soften more evenly, and are less likely to foam. No soak chickpeas still work well, they just take longer. If you want the best texture for meal prep and curry, soaking is worth it.

Can I cook chickpeas with salt in Instant Pot?

Yes, you can add salt. Many people cook chickpeas without salt because it is a classic habit, but salt does not ruin chickpeas in modern pressure cooking. Although I like to add little bit salt in chickpeas as I use them mostly for salads this improves natural flavour and these are ready for salads. If I am using in curry I adjust salt required in that recipe.

Natural release or quick release for Instant Pot chickpeas?

Use natural release for chickpeas. Chickpeas can foam and quick release can push foam into the valve. Natural release gives better texture and keeps the Instant Pot cleaner. If you are short on time, do timed natural release for 10 to 15 minutes, then vent slowly.

Why are my chickpeas still hard after cooking?

This usually happens when chickpeas are old or very dry. Increase the cook time by 5 to 10 minutes and use natural release again. Also make sure you are using enough water. Avoid adding acidic ingredients like tomatoes or lemon during cooking because acid can slow softening.

How long do cooked chickpeas last?

Cooked chickpeas last about 4 to 5 days in the fridge and up to 3 months in the freezer. Cool fully before storing. If you plan to freeze, portion them first so you can thaw only what you need.
