Simple Avocado toast recipe. A delicious and healthy breakfast with crusty sourdough bread topped with avocado and a handful of ingredients. Literally, one of the easiest and best breakfasts you can make in 5 minutes.

    best avocado toast recipe

I have been working towards eating healthy meals with a good amount of heart-healthy fats and rich in fibre. Most of these meals are gut-friendly, gluten-free, dairy-free meals. This avocado toast is vegan/dairy-free too.

This simple avocado toast recipe is a speedy breakfast or an anytime snack!. You only need a handful of ingredients and freshness of lime zest and a pinch of chilli flakes melds together beautifully.

    Why We Love This Recipe

    • I simply love Avocado, and bread. What better way to combine them both other than making avocado toast. I make many avocado toast variations. This one is the simplest of them all.
    • It looks beautiful! Making avocado toast any which way is and this looks totally instagramable.
    • Avocados are rich in healthy fats, minerals, fibre and other nutrients.
    • Consuming healthy fats in your meal helps you to feel full for longer. Good fat is also required to carry out various metabolic processes.
    • The recipe is highly adaptable. You can make it as simple as simple salt and lime juice or add any fancy sandwich /toast topping over it.

    Ingredients for Avocado toast

Bread: I prefer to use sourdough bread for avocado toast. You could either use sourdough bread, rye, Multigrain bread or wholewheat bread if you prefer that.

Avocado: A medium-sized good quality Hass avocado is preferable. If you have perfectly ripe Indian avocado you could use that. I will talk about how to select the perfect avocado towards the end of this post. You can check it in the expert tips section.

Seasoning: toasted Sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, Chilli flakes, flaky sea salt and some lemon zest that adds a lot of freshness.

    Herbs: Basil and cilantro.

Method : How to Make Avocado toast

Primarily I make two types of avocado toast. The major difference being in one variation Avocado is sliced and in one variation I use mashed avocado with seasonings and herbs. Other than the texture of avocados you can completely change the taste with a variety of bread.

Sliced Avocado Toast: Cut Avocado into two halves and remove the pit. Take one half and while holding it together thinly slice it. Do not separate the avocado slices yet.

Toast Sourdough bread slice in a toaster or on the pan after applying olive oil or butter. Toast it till golden brown from both sides.

Now place the sliced avocado over toasted bread and slightly spread it like a fan.

Now sprinkle some sesame seeds, black sesame, sea salt flakes and lemon zest. You have a delicious breakfast ready in minutes.

Mashed Avocado toast: In a bowl place the avocado and simply mash with a fork that it remains chunky and not completely mashed. Now add in flavourings. I like to keep it very simple. I just add salt, cilantro and mix them lightly.

Toast Sourdough bread slice in a toaster or in a pan or griddle after applying olive oil or butter. Toast it till golden brown from both sides.

Now sprinkle some sesame seeds, black sesame, sea salt flakes and lemon zest. You have a delicious breakfast ready in minutes.

More Topping Suggestions for Avocado Toast

Vegetarian protein Toppings: Lentils, chickpeas, crispy tofu.

Crunchy Vegetables: radish slices, cherry tomato halves, pickles, Jalapeño, green beans, red onions, pico de gallo, pomegranate arils, salsa or relishes.

Nuts and Seeds: toasted pepitas, or sesame seeds, sliced toasted almonds

Non-vegetarian proteins: Eggs (boiled, poached or fried), sliced salmon trouts etc.

Cheese: Mature cheddar, feta, goat cheese, Mexican cotija, queso.

    Recipe Notes and Tips

    1. If you are making mashed avocado toast do not directly mash it over toast. That will make the toast soggy.
    2. To Make Keto-friendly avocado toast use keto bread.
    3. If you like to make it gluten-free use a gluten-free bread.

I am also answering some FAQs here.

How to Select Perfect Avocado for the recipe

To know if an avocado is perfect, lightly press the skin with your thumb. It should be firm but still give under thumb pressure. Mushy avocados are not good for toast.

    Is Avocado Toast Healthy?

Yes if you use healthy ingredients in the right quantities. Avocado toast is healthy if you do not go overboard with high calories toppings. This also depends upon the type of bread. I usually use sourdough bread. Calorie-wise One sourdough bread slice has approximately 150-180 calories. A medium sized avocado has approximately 250 calories. So if you use ½ avocado and one slice of sourdough bread with my toppings it becomes approximately 350 calories per toast.

One toast is quite filling and hugely satisfying due to this being rich in fibre and healthy fats. So the nutrition in avocado depends on the amount of ingredients you add and your calorie budget. Avocados are high in fibre and good fats. Avocados have more potassium than a banana and are loaded with micronutrients.
