Although it is mostly known as greek food, you can find this in Mediterranean and middle eastern food as well. Here’s an easy tzatziki recipe to serve with your appetisers, gyros, grilled meats or veggies.

Tzatziki Ingredients

You need very few ingredients to make tzatziki that tastes authentic just like greek restaurants.

You need yogurt, drained cucumber, extra virgin olive oil, dill and mint, garlic (optional), lemon juice and salt.

I like to use either English or Persian cucumbers for making this. Seedless cucumbers are The Best for making this sauce.

How to Make It

Tzatziki is super easy and quick to make. You can watch Video below or follow detailed step by step instructions in Recipe card.

First I grate cucumbers using large holes of a box grater. I wash it properly and do not peel it. This gives a nice texture and those lovely green specks in the sauce.

Next, I squeeze out extra water before mixing it with yogurt. Make sure to drain out the water properly otherwise tzatziki is liquidy and watered down.

Mix in greek yogurt. You can use regular yogurt as well but make sure to drain out extra water by placing yogurt in a muslin cloth placed in a mesh strainer over a bowl.

Add the yogurt, dill leaves, mint leaves, salt, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice.

Mix all of these and allow the tzatziki to rest for 5 minutes for flavours to meld. You can serve it immediately or chill for some time in the fridge before serving.

Recipe Notes

Draining cucumbers are a must for the perfect texture of tzatziki. You can salt cucumber before squeezing out water. This will ensure that the sauce is not watered down.

I have not added garlic as I do not like the taste. But if you love garlic go ahead and add it. Authentic greek cucumber sauce has garlic in it.

For the best taste use full-fat yogurt.

The perfect way to drain cucumbers is by using a cheesecloth or thick napkin. But if not available use your hands to squeeze out as much water as you can.

How to Serve it?

This fresh tzatziki recipe is great to add zing to any summer meal and add nutrition and taste to dinner or lunch.

You can slather it in pita bread for making sandwiches, pita wraps, tabbouleh or falafel.

You can serve with grilled veggies or grilled meats.

This also tastes good as a topping for baked potatoes, shawarma, kebabs or grilled paneer skewers.

Make ahead and Storage Instructions

To make Tzatziki ahead of time, you can mix all of the ingredients other than cucumber and add cucumber just before serving. You can store it in an Airtight fridge safe glass container. Freezing Tzatziki won’t give you that taste. It is not a time-consuming dish to make so I suggest avoiding freezing it, meal-prep it and make it fresh.
